Cosmic Hosts: Shred—A Musical Surfing Collaboration

June 5th, 5:00 PM
Shred Final2X

Join us in the Cosmic studio on Friday, June 5th for an evening of music, surf and discovery. The Santa Cruz Guitar Company and Ventana Surfboards & Supplies will be showcasing their handmade creations along with the design and construction processes that go into producing them. We’ll have beautiful finished guitars, surfboards, bodysurfing handplanes and other eco surf products on display. Gerard Egan, one of Santa Cruz Guitar Company’s luthiers, will be on hand playing a mix of swing and surf music on a SCGC guitar.

Founded in 1976, the Santa Cruz Guitar Company brought boutique guitar making to the forefront of the steel string guitar business. Over the years they’ve stayed true to their commitment to responsibly build the world’s most sophisticated acoustic guitars. SCGC’s owner and founder, Richard Hoover, has traveled all over the world to procure responsibly harvested and old growth tone woods and is known internationally as a forefather of the boutique acoustic guitar industry. About to celebrate their 40th anniversary, Richard and his team of 16 highly skilled luthiers handcraft just over 500 guitars a year in their small shop in Santa Cruz. They’ve created custom guitars for some of the top names in the music industry: Eric Clapton, Brad Paisley, Tony Rice, Elvis Costello, Nokie Edwards, Jerry Garcia and hundreds of others. They provide Ventana with offcuts of exotic, sustainably grown woods used in the production of their outstanding, custom guitars, that Ventana then uses in the production of their surf supplies.

The craftspeople at Ventana Surfboards & Supplies create and sell hollow, reclaimed wooden surfboards; bodysurfing handplanes, and eco surf supplies that are loved by adventurers everywhere. Their boards are high performance, surfable works of art that jumpstart conversations in homes and wave lineups. They live and work in Santa Cruz, where they test their products on some of the most challenging waves on the planet. Ventana donates up to 5% of profits to ocean conservation.

For this event, Ventana & SCGC are extending their collaboration to include the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. We’re turning our conference room into a pop-up shop featuring handplanes, surf supplies and clothing from Ventana, SCGC, and the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. Five percent of profits from the night’s sales will be donated to the Seymour Center.

Stop by early and check out the amazing boards, guitars, and tunes and enjoy tasty bites from our friends at Hula’s Island Grill paired with chilled beer.

Join us at the Cosmic studio at 115 Cooper Street (corner of Cooper & Front Streets) in downtown Santa Cruz, from 5-9pm for an evening of beauty and generosity.

Please confirm via Eventbrite so that we’re sure to have enough food and drink on hand.
