Cosmic Hosts: Typography, Tequila & Tacos

April 3rd, 5:00 PM
Typography Tacos Tequila Final Eventbrite

See behind the scenes of typeface design with Jason Mark Jones. He’ll be sharing the process of creating his California-made typeface, Sullivan, with us -- from sketches to final font. Inspired by other bevel style fonts and hand drawn signage, it marries structure with personality. Rumor has it that he’s designed a typeface for each of his three sons. You’ll have to ask him for the details.

Typographer, designer, and art director Matthew Wyne will also be taking over one of our studio walls. He describes himself as a designer that seeks out type-driven projects that speak to his values of clarity and humanity. His typeface Cleft, “is named after the action made by a chisel as it cleaves away material to create a shape.” He will have some process sketches of the font flanked by the final design.

Kevin Devaney, Writer, Poet, and Co-Founder of The Art Bart & Café, – Santa Cruz's Arts Education Philanthropub, will be back in the studio. He’ll be busting out poetry by request and banging it out on an old school typewriter. We’re stoked to have Kevin in our midst again. Years ago, he quit his day job as a barista once he realized he could make a living as a street poet in downtown SC. He’s an awesome poet and excellent human. Come check him out.

Santa Cruz calligrapher, fine artist, and teacher Ruth Korch will be on hand, displaying her beautiful calligraphy work and paintings. She’ll also be giving live demos, showing how it’s done using pointed pen, and even readily available supplies - like soda cans! With ink she expresses one of her passions – calligraphy, or “beautiful writing.” She tells us that, “Truth, beauty and gratefulness are where I like to focus, hopefully leaving viewers more buoyant and hopeful on this journey through life.” It’s an incredibly cool process to watch.

Internationally renowned lettering artist, typographer, sign maker, and graphic designer Carl Rohrs will also be in the studio doing live brush calligraphy. His calligraphy is represented in many publications and collections, including the San Francisco Public Library's Harrison Collection of Calligraphy and Lettering. He’s been teaching calligraphy and graphic design for the Cabrillo College Art Department since 1984 and teaches intensive workshops for calligraphy societies around the world. Seriously, you have to come check his stuff out.

Our Westside friends at Venus Spirits will also be joining us to show off the typography and package design on their Gin Blend No. 01 bottle. Designed by Chen Design Associates out of San Francisco, the design was selected as one of the 39 winning projects featured in Communication Arts’ 2014, Design Annual 55. We’re big fans of Venus Spirits and stoked to be sharing some of the design work associated with their spirits.

Venus Spirits will be on hand, talking about the design and pouring 3 oz. cocktails made with their El Ladrón Blue Agave tequila and Gin Blend No. 01 - of course.

Straight out of Midtown, we’re proud to welcome Vivas Organic Mexican Food back to the studio. Their two-bite tacos are just what’s needed to make the evening complete.

Join us at the Cosmic studio at 115 Cooper Street (corner of Cooper & Front Streets) in downtown Santa Cruz, from 5-9pm for an evening of totally terrific typography.

Please confirm via Eventbrite so that we can have enough food and drink on hand.
